- Baking Soda
This is the red lava lamp I made! - Canola/Vegetable oil
- Water
- Food Coloring
- Water bottle
- Vinegar
First, put in about one tablespoon of baking soda into your water bottle.
Next, fill half the bottle with oil, along with a tablespoon of water.
Then, comes the fun part, put in 10 drops of whatever color food coloring you wish!
Finally, pour about two tablespoons of vinegar (you can also use apple cider vinegar) and quickly screw the cap on.
Let the magic happen! It is so much fun to watch the little bubbles float around the bottle!
The science behind this is that vinegar and oil don't mix well so they separate from each other, and the oil rises to the top because it has lower density than water. The vinegar goes to the bottom and reacts with the baking soda forming small bubbles of carbon dioxide gas that rise to the top and takes the colored vinegar. The gas escapes when it reaches the top and colored water falls back down causing this awesome lava affect!
